Incisione ispirata al celebre romanzo epistolare I dolori del giovane Werther (Die Leiden des jungen Werthers, 1774) di Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. La scena raffigura il momento emotivamente più intenso del libro: Werther, ormai disperato, si getta ai piedi di Charlotte, afferrandole le mani e portandole agli occhi e alla fronte, in un ultimo gesto d’addio e devozione.
L’episodio è tratto dalla celebre lettura di Ossian, che precede il tragico epilogo. Il legame tra Werther e Charlotte è segnato da un amore impossibile, reso ancor più struggente dalla sensibilità del protagonista e dal suo destino segnato dal dolore e dalla solitudine.
L’acquaforte, realizzata con finezza e precisione, segue il gusto sentimentale e romantico dell’epoca, enfatizzando l’intensità espressiva dei volti e la gestualità appassionata dei due protagonisti.
