Al centro, il maestro del coro, estasiato dal canto, ha perso la parrucca, mentre i cantanti sembrano ignorarlo.

La piastra iniziale per The Distrest Poet fu prodotta subito dopo il completamento del dipinto ad olio, ma il terzo stato non fu completato fino alla fine del 1740, quando Hogarth annunciò la sua intenzione di pubblicare un set di tre immagini, di cui solo due furono realizzate.
