Il Magasin Pittoresque è stato pubblicato per la prima volta nel gennaio 1833 sotto forma di libretto di otto pagine, illustrato con incisioni, venduto per due soldi, otto giorni dopo, seguì un nuovo numero, e così via, ogni settimana, per diciotto anni, vale a dire, fino alla legge sul francobollo del 16 luglio 1850.
Il Magasin pittoresque era una sorta di enciclopedia popolare che, senza tralasciare importanti scoperte moderne, si occupava soprattutto di far rivivere il passato. La descrizione di “Magazzino” voleva indicare che la collezione conteneva un po’ di tutto: morale, storia, archeologia, arte, scienze naturali, industria, viaggi, tutti argomenti, in una parola, che, rivolgendosi al cuore, all’immaginazione e al gusto, sarebbero stati di natura tale da arricchire il tempo libero della vita interiore e del focolare domestico con puro e istruttivo divertimento.
