Description:
Incisione ottocentesca raffigurante Jeffrey Amherst, I Barone Amherst (1717-1797), illustre generale britannico noto per il suo ruolo nella Guerra dei Sette Anni e per la conquista del Canada sotto il dominio britannico.
L’opera è tratta da un dipinto di Joshua Reynolds, celebre ritrattista dell’epoca georgiana, ed è stata incisa da S.W. Reynolds, noto incisore attivo tra la fine del XVIII e l’inizio del XIX secolo. L’uso della acquaforte e acquatinta permette di ottenere delicate sfumature e un’eccellente resa dei dettagli, enfatizzando il carattere solenne e autorevole del soggetto.
Questa rara incisione, realizzata su carta forte, rappresenta un’importante testimonianza iconografica e storica, ideale per collezionisti di stampe antiche e appassionati di ritrattistica storica britannica.

Il Magasin Pittoresque è stato pubblicato per la prima volta nel gennaio 1833 sotto forma di libretto di otto pagine, illustrato con incisioni, venduto per due soldi, otto giorni dopo, seguì un nuovo numero, e così via, ogni settimana, per diciotto anni, vale a dire, fino alla legge sul francobollo del 16 luglio 1850.
Il Magasin pittoresque era una sorta di enciclopedia popolare che, senza tralasciare importanti scoperte moderne, si occupava soprattutto di far rivivere il passato. La descrizione di “Magazzino” voleva indicare che la collezione conteneva un po’ di tutto: morale, storia, archeologia, arte, scienze naturali, industria, viaggi, tutti argomenti, in una parola, che, rivolgendosi al cuore, all’immaginazione e al gusto, sarebbero stati di natura tale da arricchire il tempo libero della vita interiore e del focolare domestico con puro e istruttivo divertimento.
