Le incisioni sono in ottima tiratura e molto fresche, senza macchie o foxing, sebbene al retro si possano notare alcune macchie di colore.

Questa è una nuova edizione ampliata di uno dei cataloghi erotici più famosi dell’Ottocento, pubblicato originariamente nel 1831. Le incisioni di questa edizione sono originariamente stampate in bianco e nero e poi successivamente sono state colorate a mano in epoca successiva.  Ritenuto un “complemento indispensabile” per i collezionisti e gli studiosi di arte, il volume riproduce, con dovizia di dettagli, le opere del celebre Gabinetto Segreto del Real Museo di Napoli. Le incisioni raffigurano dipinti, bronzi, statue e altri oggetti di contenuto erotico, provenienti dagli scavi di Pompei, Ercolano e Stabia.

La collezione, considerata la più ricca e suggestiva del suo genere, fu custodita con severa riservatezza e mostrata solo a un pubblico selezionato: uomini adulti e rispettabili, muniti di speciale autorizzazione. Questo volume è dunque una preziosa testimonianza delle suggestioni e delle licenziose atmosfere che animavano la vita privata dell’antichità classica.
César Famin, diplomatico francese e appassionato erudito, compilò e commentò l’opera durante la sua attività a Napoli e Genova. Il risultato è un affascinante connubio tra erudizione archeologica e un gusto decadente per la trasgressione artistica, che rende quest’opera ancora oggi ricercata e rara.
