L’immagine mostra Gesù crocifisso, con una composizione intensa e drammatica. Ai piedi della Croce, the Vergine Maria piange il figlio, mentre in penombra compaiono le figure delle altre due Marie, che assistono al tragico evento. L’uso della luce e dell’ombra crea un effetto profondamente emotivo, sottolineando il pathos della scena.
In basso, due versi incisi del poeta Jacques Delille arricchiscono il significato simbolico e spirituale dell’opera.
