Cola di Rienzo tentò di restaurare il comune di Roma durante un periodo di conflitti tra papi e baroni, autodefinendosi “l’ultimo dei tribuni del popolo”. La sua figura ha ispirato anche l’opera lirica Rienzi, l’ultimo dei tribuni di Richard Wagner.
