Alfonso II d'Este, born in Ferrara on 22 November 1533 and died on 27 October 1597, was the fifth Duke of Ferrara, Modena and Reggio, reigning from 1559 until his death.
Having had no legitimate children, upon his death Ferrara returned to the sovereignty of the Papal States, while Modena and Reggio passed to a cadet branch of the House of Este. He was also an important protector of the poet Torquato Tasso.
